1972 Topps Dock Ellis
My new approach to collecting cards is to buy/trade for only the cards that I want. I don’t want every Dodger card, cards that are valuable but ugly, or every card in a set. What good is putting together an entire set of 2011 Topps if I feel no connection to 98 percent of the cards in the set? When I flip through my collection I want to be flipping through a box of cards that I love. I want to collect for aesthetic appreciation, players I love, or pure nostalgia. I think those are the most important reasons to collect. I don’t want to be a completest or an investor, I just want all my cards to be worthy of (in my mind) a frame hanging on the wall.
That being said, last year I got caught up in the Topps Million giveaway and I bought a ton of packs while putting together the set and I redeemed a bunch of codes. I traded a boring late 60’s Red Sox player that I had redeemed for this 1972 Dock Ellis. Maybe I lost a few bucks in Book Value, but I gained so much in aesthetic value. How perfect is the psychedelic 1972 design for a player who claims to have pitched his 1970 no hitter while high on LSD? Dock Ellis, Ellis, D., LSD? This card is damn near perfect.

A peek at my card collection. Mostly Dodgers cards and mostly pre-1980, but I try to keep it mixed up.
